Why do we need to plan? What ends up being developed if a rigorous approach to planning is not used? Do application projects flow from an understanding of the business strategy? Do they support that strategy? Business and IT management should make these decisions jointly. Underlying the principles of IT governance is the theme of effective and efficient communications between IT and business. When IT and business are aligned and integrated in results, planning will provide reduced project time and costs, increased project success rates, reduced time to market, increased customer satisfaction, and increased operational performance and efficiency.

The successful project balances the needs of business, end users, and IT. While user-centered design can address the business needs, IT- Business alignment addresses the relationship between the business and IT. So as IT professionals, it is important to understand the dimensions of alignment and to do what we can to improve it.
